Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic pain condition which affects around 25 in every 100,000 people and, typically, develops spontaneously following trauma or surgery. It is most commonly seen in the upper and lower limbs, including the pelvis.
There are several subtypes of CRPS. Type 1 occurs following illness or injury, although not in association with specific nerve damage; Type 2, alternatively, is associated with nerve damage. Warm CRPS refers to a type associated with a warm sensation on the skin, more typical of early stage presentation, whereas Cold CRPS refers to a type associated with a cold sensation and is more typical of long-term cases.
Across types, CRPS is characterised by severe and intransigent pain in response to typically non-noxious stimuli (changes in termperature, pressure or tactile sensation), or hyperalgesia. This may present as burning, stabbing or stinging. This pain may worsen over the course of days or weeks and can be exacerbated by stress. In addition to pain, the limb may tremor and spasm (dystonia), swell and/or become stiff. Patients may also experience differences in sweating, relative to their unaffected limb, excessive or reduced hair and nail growth, changes in the colour of the affected limb and muscle waste. It may also cause changes in the way you perceive the affected limb. The exact cause of CRPS remains poorly understood, although it is thought to result from an abnormal inflammatory, or immune, response to injury in both the peripheral and central nervous systems.

What does our logo mean? Though simple, it says a lot.
The blue circles you can see across the upper and lower limbs refer to those parts of the body where CRPS is most likely to emerge; their colour reflects those temperature changes associated with the condition, as well as the 'hot' to 'cold' acute to chronic transition. The simple, anonymous, design of the figure reflects the fact that CRPS affects males, females, young and old alike, while green was chosen to embody peace, growth, safety and harmony, and our collective aim to realise positive change in the lives of CRPS patients everywhere.
